The Reserve Bank of India has introduced tighter guidelines for digital lending platforms, adding new disclosure and compliance requirements aimed at protecting consumers from predatory lending practices. The rules require lending apps to route all loan disbursals and repayments directly through bank accounts, without pass-through arrangements involving third parties.
Fintech startups operating in the lending space will need to review their partnerships with non-banking financial companies to ensure compliance. Industry groups have broadly welcomed the move as a step toward standardizing an industry that has seen rapid, sometimes unregulated growth.
